Symptoms: Brown to grayish-tan and slight electrode wear. Correct heat range for engine ad operating conditions.

Recommendations: When new spark plugs are installed, replace with plugs of the same heat range.

WORN
Symptoms: Rounded electrodes with a small amount of a deposit on the firing end. Normal Color. Causes hard starting in damp or cold weather and poor fuel economy
Recommendations: Plugs have been left in the engine too long. Replace with new plugs of the same heat range. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule.

CARBON DEPOSITS
Symptoms: Dry sooty deposits indicates a rich mixture or weak ignition. Causes misfiring, hard starting, and hesitation.
Recommendations: Make sure the plug has the correct heat Range, Check for clogged air filter or problem in the fuel system or engine management system. Also check for ignition system problems.
ASH DEPOSIT
Symptoms: Light brown deposits encrusted on the side or center electrodes or both. Derived from oil ad/or fuel. Excessive amount may mask the spark, Causing misfiring and hesitation during acceleration.
Recommendations: If excessive deposits accumulate over a short time or mileages, install new valve guide seals to prevent seep-age of oil into the combustion chambers. Also try changing gasoline brands.
OIL DEPOSITS
Symptoms: Oily coating caused by poor oil control, oil is leaking past worn valve guides or piston rings into the combustion chamber. Causes hard starting, misfiring and hesitation.
Recommendations: Correct thr mechanical condition with necessary repairs and install new plugs.
GAP BRIDGING
Symptoms: Combustion deposits lodge between the electrodes, Heavy deposits accumulate ad bridge the electrode gap. The plug ceases to fire, resulting in a dead cylinder.
Recommendations: Locate the faulty plug and remove the deposits from between the electrodes.
TOO HOT
Symptoms: Blistered, white insulator, eroded electrode and absence of deposits. Result in shortened plug life.
Recommendations: Check for the correct plug heat range, over advanced ignition timing, lean fuel mixture, intake manifold vacuum leaks, sticking valves and insufficient engine cooling.
PREIGNITION
Symptoms: Melted electrodes, insulators are white, but may be dirty due to misfiring or flying debris in the combustion chamber. Can lead to engine damage.
Recommendations: Check for the correct plug heat range, over advance ignition timing, lean fuel mixture, insufficient engine cooling and lack of lubrication.
HIGH SPEED GLAZING
Symptoms: Insulator has yellowish, glazed appearance indicates that combustion chamber temperatures have risen suddenly during hard acceleration. Normal deposits melt to form a conductive coating Causes misfiring at high speeds.
Recommendations: Install new plugs. Consider using colder plug if driving habits warrant.
DETONATION
Symptoms: Insulator may be cracked or chipped, improper gap setting techniques can also result in a fractured insulator tip. Can lead to piston damage
Recommendations: Make sure the fuel anti-knock values meet engine requirements. Use care when setting the gaps on new plugs. Avoid lugging the engine.
MECHANICAL DAMAGE
Symptoms: May be causes by a foreign object in the combustion chamber or the piston striking an incorrect reach (too long) plug, Causes a dead cylinder, and could result in piston damage.
Recommendations: Repair the mechanical damage. Remove the foreign object from the engine and/or install the correct reach plug.

A gas-station attendant with a bad attitude (Jack Nicholson) finds life more exciting after he is allowed to hang out with a chapter of the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle club.
The Angels first take note of "Poet" after one of them inadvertently damages his motorcycle and breaks its headlight. "Poet", with far more guts than brains, challenges the Angel that hit his motorcycle (an act that would traditionally result in every Angel present participating in a gang beating of the attacker "When a non-Angel hits an Angel, all Angels retalitate"), but the leader of the Angels, Buddy (Adam Roarke), intervenes and tells Poet that the Angels will replace the headlight. In the meantime, he's welcome to ride with them while they take care of business—which turns out to be going to a bar and beating up the members of another gang who previously beat an Angel.
Poet is told to wait outside, but ends up helping the Angels. Later that night, the Angels return the favor by hunting down and beating four sailors who beat Poet four-against-one after he parted company with the group (as in The Born Losers, the issue of "good" and "bad" is muted; Poet accidentally bumps into one of the sailors and speaks rudely to him before he realizes that the sailor has three other sailors with him. The four sailors then refuse to accept his apology—but the Angels only know that four sailors beat up Poet, and he doesn't tell them how the earlier fight started). One of the sailors pulls a knife on the Angels and is then killed accidentally in the fight that follows.
Poet is allowed to ride with the Angels and is eventually elevated to "prospect" status. He is attracted to Buddy's some-time girlfriend (Sabrina Scharf) who toys with him while remaining hopelessly committed to Buddy.
Much of the story that follows consists of scenes of the Angels partying or being provoked to violence by "squares". Although the Angels are shown as being loud and generally irreverent, they are never shown starting trouble except when taking revenge on members of other motorcycle clubs.
As a scene somewhat similarly to The Wild One, one of the Angels inadvertently causes the death of a bystander—in this case when an elderly motorist loses control of his car and drives off a country road into a field. The Angels are blamed for the man's death although the story ends without the case going to court.
Buddy is written as a responsible and clear-thinking leader. Poet is cynical but much more conservative and straight-laced than Buddy.
Eventually Buddy's girlfriend succeeds in provoking a confrontation between Buddy and Poet that only one survives.

Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern wrote the film, with 31-year old Hopper making his directorial debut for which he received the Best Film by a New Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1969. Fonda (also producing) stars with Hopper as the two anti-heroes of the piece, Billy and Wyatt. The film is also notable for a breakthrough performance by Jack Nicholson as lawyer George Hanson, a role which earned him the first of many Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.The film was produced for under $400,000 and was extremely successful at the box-office, breaking in a fresh wave of independent films known as ‘New Hollywood’, much like Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs would do 25 years later. It struck a chord with the alternative youth culture market on which the movie was based, with a pulsating rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack the likes of which had never been attached to film. "What’re you rebelling against, Johnny?" says dancing party girl Mildred to the moody, leather-clad biker boy memorably played by a young Marlon Brando. His famous answer? "Whaddya got?"

Such an insouciant toss-off may seem tame by today’s standards, but in director Laslo Benedek’s 1953 "The Wild One" (produced by Stanley Kramer), that type of reckless rebellion (without a cause) pre-Elvis, was a big deal. A very big deal. Indeed, the entire picture had enormous impact. The movie, based on a Harper’s Magazine story that itself was loosely based on a real-life incident involving a gang of bikers invading a small California town on a Fourth of July weekend, was viewed as so incendiary that the picture was banned in Great Britain until 1968. (Think how today mainstream news easily discusses the murder of San Francisco chapter Hell Angels president Mark "Papa" Guardado). Given how forced some of this movie feels today, it seems rather silly, but I love this picture -- from its slinky Leith Stevens score, to its dual versions of the alpha male black leather bad boy -- a stoic Brando and a boisterous Lee Marvin -- two cinematic geniuses stomping out the weaklings and marking their territory with inspired appetites (for destruction).

The Welbike was a British single-seat motorcycle devised during World War Two at Station IX — the Inter Services Research Bureau — based at Welwyn, UK, for use by Special Operations Executive (SOE). It has the distinction of being the smallest motorcycle ever used by the British Armed Forces.^[1] Between 1942 and 1945, 3853 units were built and although it was not much used by the SOE, many were issued to the Parachute Regiment and used at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden.^[2]

The original prototype was designed by SOE motor cycle enthusiast Harry Lester,^[3] from an idea developed by * Lt. Colonel John Dolphin, the Commanding Officer of Station IX, the secret Inter-Services Military Research Establishment based in a mansion an hours drive north of London near the town of Welwyn in Hertfordshire^[4], which had been taken over for the war effort^[5]. Powered by a Villiers 98 cm³ single-cylinder two-stroke petrol (gasoline) engine, the Welbike was designed to fit into a standard parachute airdrop container 51 inches (130 cm), 15 inches (38 cm) high and 12 inches (30 cm) inches wide^[2] and be easily assembled and ready for use as quickly as possible.^[1] The name Welbike comes from the custom that all the clandestine equipment devised at Station IX in Welwyn had names starting with Wel, e.g, Welman, Welrod.^[6] There was very limited space in the airborne equipment container, so the Welbike had no suspension, no lights and just a single rear brake.^[7]
The fuel tank was as small as possible and had to be pressurised by a pump^{[clarification needed]} as it was too small for gravity feed. The range on maximum capacity of 6.5 pints of fuel was a respectable 90 miles at about 30 mph. To save time the tanks were pressurised before the Welbike went into action. The Welbike was then packed into the parachute container with the rear wheel to the base of the parachute canister, which had a percussion head to minimise damage on landing. Once it hit the ground all that was needed was to twist the handlebars into position and lock them on spring-loaded pins. The saddle was pulled up and the footrests folded out ready to push start the two stroke engine and ride into action.^[7] The aim was that a paratrooper could remove the Welbike from its special green container (which was marked in white lettering with the words Motor Cycle) and its easily identified coloured parachute, and be on the road within 11 seconds.^[8] The prototype survived extensive drop testing at the Special Operations School at Arisaig in Scotland where it was demonstrated to the commando forces.^[9]
The prototype was then sent to the Excelsior Ltd for further development. A number of pre-production machines were built for further testing and experimental modifications at the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment at Sherburn-in-Elmet near Leeds in September 1942, including dropping them from aircraft to land by parachute. The Villers engine was found to be seriously under powered when ridden by a fully equipped soldier, so it was retuned for maximum power.^[1]
The simple design of the Welbike meant that it was easy and quick to produce and from 1942 went into full production for issue to airborne forces for use in parachute assaults. By 1943 it was also being widely used by ground assault forces, including the Commandos and the Royal Marines particularly for beach landings at Anzio and Normandy. The small size of the Welbike meant that it also proved very useful as a general airfield transport by the Royal Air Force and aircrews based in the large Far East airfields would 'stow away' a Welbike if they could find one.^[1]
There were three production versions of the Welbike. The first 1,183 were known as the Mark 1 and were really the developed version of the original prototype with tuned engines. These can be easily identified as they did not have a rear mudguard fitted. One thousand four hundred Mark 2 Series 1 Welbikes were produced and these had a range of minor modifications, including the addition of the rear mudguard. The final batch of 1,340 was the Mark 2 Series 2 and had 'saddle' fuel tanks with a splash shielding between them and an improved filler cap, as the original design required the removal of the pressurisation pump which was too time consuming.^[1]
In combat situations, however, the Welbike could prove a liability as paratroops needed to get under cover as quickly as possible and had to find the Welbike containers before they could even start to assemble them. The difference in weight between a parachutist and a container meant that they often landed some distance apart, rather defeating the object, and many were captured by enemy forces or lost before they could even be used. The low power and small wheels also meant that they struggled to cope adequately with the often rough battlefield roads so were often abandoned by troops who found it easier to continue on foot.^[1] Another problem for the Welbike was that by the time it was in mass production much larger gliders had been developed that could carry bigger and more powerful motorcycles such as the Royal Enfield

Though it will never challenge a bigger mini bike, this home made pocket bike will buzz you around for next to nothing, and is a ton of fun.
This model uses a 3/4 hp engine, and with the 20 to 1 gearing will probably hit around 11 MPH. That's more than plenty considering how small the rig is, and it will get you where you're going quick enough - around the neighborhood's back trails, to a fishing camp... Wherever! Modify it for street use (check local laws) and you'll have a sweet ride to get to class or the corner store.
The beauty of the bike is the practicality of its size. It's small, but comfortable. Excellent for gas efficient travel to and from anywhere, and there's never a parking problem. Just chain it to a parking meter or telephone pole.
Keep in mind that this vehicle is designed basically for backyard (on your property) fun. From these plans there are no brakes, lights or horn. If you want to ride on the street legally, you need to check your local laws. Take the construction drawings to your local Motor Vehicle Bureau and check out state requirements for licensing. License plates and insurance are likely both are necessary if you would like to use this bike in traffic.

How to Build a Pocket Bike Frame

The engine in the plans is a 3/4-hp Olson and Rice engine (now manufactured as O&R) mounted on an 1/8-in. sheet of aluminum. This is made for some agricultural operations.
But any small engine will do.
The aluminum sheet in turn is attached to the frame with four 4-1/4" . U-bolts. (The bolts permit quick adjustment of the chain tension.) Depending upon the rider's bulk, the little bike may or may not take a steep hill. On occasion I've had to dismount and tote her up a hill under my arm.
To make it, you'll need at least 12 to 15 ft. of 5/8-in. thin wall tubing- for the frame. Build the frame in two sections and, for strength, join them with 5/8-in. steel pins inserted in the tubing at the joints. Where the pins cannot be used, wrap steel bands around the frame and braze for added strength. The brackets which support the rear wheel are bent into a U-shape, slipped into the frame and brazed.
The handlebars are two pieces of the thin wall tubing joined in the middle with two pieces of metal 1/8 x 1-1/2" x 5". spaced 3-1/4". apart. The latter are drilled out at center to receive the 5/8 x 4-1/2", bolt which serves as the turning spindle. To receive the front axle, the ends of the forks are flattened and drilled. To complete the front fork, bend the upper portions to form the handlebars. For leg clearance, bend forks slightly forward.

Sprockets and Steering Design

I used a Fairbanks-Morse centrifugal clutch with an inside diameter of 1/2". Thus, I had to use a 5/8". adapter to install the clutch on the engine. The drive is provided by a No. 35 link chain. The engine sprocket has 11 teeth geared to the large sprocket on the 36- tooth jackshaft. Turning on the other end of the jackshaft is a 10-tooth sprocket geared to the 60-tooth sprocket on the rear wheel. This setup makes up a 20-to-l gear ratio.
The baby-size wheels are four-inchers fitted with pneumatic tires and 1/2" bearings.

Happily, there is no hunting for materials. All parts for my bike were purchased locally from a lawnmower and mini bike shop.

The seat on the bike shown was bought ready-made and fastened to the frame with four screws turned up through the metal bike-frame into its wooden base. The throttle control (and the cable) were fabricated from a bicycle hand-brake control.

This page contains a year by year overview of Honda’s scooter lineup in the USA and Canada. For detailed information on a specific Honda scooter, use the menu to the right.

Honda’s diverse scooter history includes the 1954 Juno KA (189cc 4-stroke available only in Japan), the Cub (the world’s best selling vehicle of all time) and quite a few neat mopeds. However, this site is focused only on the ‘modern’ scooters that came to North America beginning in the early 80’s.

Honda began working on their first ‘modern’ scooter in the late 1970’s. The first scooter they developed was the NB50, which was called the Tact in Japan. This scooter was released for the 1980 model year in Japan. It was an updated version of this scooter called the Aero 50 that arrived in the USA and Canada for the 1983, alongside the larger Aero 80 scooter.

1983
This was the first year Honda’s new generation of scooters arrived in North America. In the USA, Honda decided to use the ‘Aero’ name for this family of scooters, so they named the NB50 the ‘Aero 50’ and

the larger NH80 became the ‘Aero 80’. In Canada, Honda used also used the Aero moniker some ’83 NH80’s received the ‘Mascot’ name for whatever reason.

The Aero family of scooters included several noteworthy features including electric start, plastic body panels, oil injection and 12 volt electrical systems. While some of these features had been available previously on other scooters, they never had been all available at once and for such an affordable price. Viewed by some as cheap, the plastic body panels were affordable, ding resistant and easy to replace in the event of a crash.

The Aero 50 (above) was a 2-stroke, 50cc offering decent acceleration and a top speed close to 40 mph. The Aero 80 (left) wasn’t that much faster with a top speed around 43mph, but it was even peppier so it’s great for 2-up riding. The Aero 80 is a breeze to wheelie and that power in combination with its comfortable seat and beefed up suspension makes it a great choice for 2-up riding or for bigger riders. These scooters are also incredibly reliable. I’ve talked to owners with over 60,000kms (35,000 miles) on theirs. Once downside to these initial offerings from Honda is the lack of aftermarket parts that the subsequent generations of Honda scooters enjoy. MODELS: Aero 50, Aero 80 / Mascot

1984

This was another landmark year with Honda adding four more scooters. Honda added the third and final member of the 2-stroke Aero family, the short lived Aero 125. Sadly Canadians and Californians weren’t offered this scooter. This scooter was only sold in 1984 so it’s quite a rare scooter.

Honda also added another 125cc and their first 4-stroke scooter, the Elite 125 (below left). This scooter was the first member of the Elite family that would figure prominately in Honda’s scooter lineup for decades to come.

It’s surprising that Honda chose to introduce the Aero 125 at all because Honda was clearly moving to 4-stroke motors for all but their 50cc scooters.. The Elite 125 was the first look at a new generation of styling that Honda would continue to unveil in the form of the Elite 80 and Elite 250. One neat aspect of the Elite 125 is that it had a pop up headlight.

Honda’s other two new scooters were the remarkably small Spree (NQ50) and the unique NN50 3-wheeled Gyro (pictured below right in blue). Both of these scooters used 2-stroke 50cc engines and were capable of 30mph.

1985

For 1985 Honda’s 4-stroke Elite series arrived in full force. Honda added the Elite 80, the Elite 250 and updated the mid-sized Elite (left). The mid-sized Elite got a boost from 125cc to 150cc and thus a name change to the Elite 150 (CH150). The extra 25cc boosted the top speed by 10mph to 65mph and made it interstate legal in all 50 states and Canada. The Elite 150 got a nice style update with a new handlebar mounted headlight instead of the pop up unit. By moving the headlight to the handlebars, Honda was able to add a handy front truck.

Honda also added a ‘Deluxe’ version of the Elite 150, which got a digital dash and retained the Elite 125’s pop up headlight. The regular Elite 150 had analog instrumentation.

The new Elite 80 was a nicely powered scooter for around town. While not quite as peppy off the line as the Aero 80, it actually has a faster top speed of 45mph. It also had a front trunk like the Elite 150 that was capable of swallow a few small items. Storage space is okay but it’s not a strong point for this scooter.

With the Elite 250, Honda finally had a scooter that was at home on the highway. The Elite 150 could survive on the highway in a pinch, but the Elite 250 could comfortably cruise at

highway speeds without a fuss. The Elite 250’s motor is a low stress design that can happily cruise at 70mph all day.

Honda also updated the Aero 50 and Aero 80. The Aero 50 got a full redesign, while the Aero 80 got a few styling updates and a new smaller muffler which made the neat storage compartment in the right side panel possible.

The Gyro was also radically changed for ’85. Honda sold eight different three wheeled scooters in the Gyro family in Japan and for ’85 they decided to bring over a different member to the USA. Canadians did not get the Gyro after ‘84. This version is called the ‘Road Fox’ (TG50) in Japan. Check out the Gyro page

for more info. This new Gyro shared the same core engine as the earlier Gyro, but the styling was quite different which warranted a change in the model code to TG50.

1985 was also the year Honda began replacing the Aero family with the Elite line of scooters. The first Aero scooter to be discontinued was the slow selling Aero 125. Apparently scooter buyers had preferred the 4-stroke Elite 125 in 1984 or Honda had simply decided 4-strokes were the future. 1985 was another popular year for Honda scooters with an all time high of seven models available.

1986

For 1986, new emissions regulations, Honda’s preference for 4-strokes and the popularity of the 4-stroke Elite 80 spelled the death for the peppy Aero 80. This left the Aero 50 as the lone surviving member of the Aero family in North America.

This year Honda also added the original maxi-scooter, the Helix (CN250), to their North American lineup. Based on the Elite 250, the Helix was lower, longer and featured a really cool trunk which made it a great long distance touring scooter.

For 1986 Honda dropped the regular version of the Elite 150 and offered just the ‘deluxe’ version.

Using the ‘Elite R’ name, Honda introduced their 2-stroke SE50 scooter to Canadian market (shown at left). It would be another year before Americans got this scooter. In some literature, Honda referred to this scooter as the ‘Aero Sport RR’. The Elite R shares the same AF05E engine found the Aero 50 (NB50) but it has a new frame and bodywork. The Elite R would eventually replace the Aero 50 in Canada.

1987

A year after its Canadian debut, Honda released the SE50 in the USA (shown left). Here this scooter was badged as the ‘Elite S’. The Elite S did not have sporty graphics that Canadians got on their Elite R’s. Honda also sold a restricted version of the SE50 (only in the USA) called simply the ‘Elite’ (Code: SE50P). This scooter was capable of 25 mph which made it moped legal in many states.

The Elite 150 was also redesigned for 1987, giving it a much more rounded shape (below). You don’t see very many of these scooters since they were

only sold for one year in the USA market. This new Elite 150 was not brought to Canada so Canucks were left without the Elite 150 and Elite 80 after 1986.

Further trimming their lineup, Honda dropped the Gyro from their USA lineup and the Helix from their Canadian lineup. This means that 1986 was the only year the Helix was offered to Canadians.

1988
Following their 1987 actions in Canada, Honda discontinued the Helix and Elite 150 from the American market for 1988. It’s surprising that

Honda dropped the redesigned Elite 150 after just one year. These changes left the Elite 250 as the lone large scooter in their lineup.

The biggest news for 1988 was the arrival of the new SA50 scooter in the USA market. This scooter was named both the ‘Elite LX’ and ‘Elite SR’, seemingly the name varied by year and state. This scooter replaced both the Aero 50 (NB50) and Elite S (SE50) which were dropped. The SA50 used a new frame and bodywork but continued to use the AF05E engine which was also found in those two scooters. Canadians never would receive the SA50.

The other big news for 1988 was Honda’s replacement of the Spree (NQ50) with a new physically small scooter (Model Code: SB50). This new scooter was called the ‘Elite E’ in the USA and the Pal in Canada. This new scooter was quite a bit smaller but stylistically similar to the new Elite SR / LX. If you just look at pictures it can be hard to tell the difference but if you see them side by side then the differences are obvious. Besides a stylistic resemblance, the SB50 did not share very many parts with the larger Elite LX / SR scooter. The SB50 utilized the same core engine as its predecessor, the Spree. Honda also sold a faster ‘Elite ES’ version of this new scooter in the USA in 1988 only.

1989

The Elite 250 received a full redesign for ’89 which included new styling, a new horizontal engine, underseat storage capacity and analog instrumention. These final Elite 250 are really nice but rare examples. Interestingly, this was the last scooter ever sold to have a floorboard located rear brake. It seems these redesigned Elite 250’s were not sold in Canada.

1990
For 1990 Honda dropped the Elite R (SE50) from the Canadian market. Unlike in the USA, Honda did not replace this scooter with the SA50. This left just the Pal, which I believe was still sold in Canada for another year.

1991
With sales remaining low, Honda discontinued the Elite 250 and the unpopular Pal / Elite E. Honda’s lineup for 1991 was pretty dismal compared to its mid 80’s glory. Canadians weren’t offered any scooters and Americans couldn’t buy another bigger than 80cc. Thankfully the Elite SR/LX was a pretty cool scooter.

1992 - 1993
For the 1992 model year, Honda responded to American enthusiasts cries to bring back the original maxi scooter, the Helix, to the American market. This scooter was last sold in the USA in 1987.

Honda also returned to the Canadian market with the fantastic 50cc 2-stroke Dio (SK50M). The SK50 Dio utilized a new and quite superior AF16E engine which was the first new 50cc 2-stroke engine offered in North America since the AF05e was introduced inside the ’85 Aero 50.

1994 - 2000
Honda replaced the motor in the 50cc Elite for the 1994 model year with the superior ‘AF16E’ engine also found in the Canadian market Dio. They also dropped the ‘LX’ suffix, so all 1994 and newer SA50 were called Elite SR’s except for moped legal versions. With the introduction of the new motor, Honda added a moped legal version called the ‘Elite S’ in 1994 (code SA50P) that was capable of 25mph. Do not confuse this scooter with the unrestricted 1988 SE50 which was also badged the Elite S. The new generation of Elite scooters are very popular with speed enthusiasts because the aftermarket parts scene is enormous that’s to the popularity of the AF16E motor in Asia.

2001

With sales picking up and added pressure from Vespa returning the North American market, Honda and Yamaha steadily bolstered their lineup by introducing several new scooters over the new few years. This year was the beginning of a present era for Honda scooters. Honda ushered in this new era by replacing it’s now 15 year old Helix with the new Reflex (NSS250). The Reflex was sold in two versions with the premium version offering ABS, a first for Honda’s scooters. The Reflex was the first all new scooter model from Honda since 1987 in the USA.

2002
For 2002, Honda continued to replace its long running models with newer and updated designs. Honda cut the Elite SR and Dio scooters, which were the last

2-stroke scooters Honda has sold in North America. The Elite SR and Dio were replaced by the new retro styled CHF50. This scooter was sold under the Metropolitan name in the USA and as the Jazz in Canada. This scooter is also known as the Crea and Scoopy overseas. With the discontinuation of the Elite SR, the Elite 80 was left as the last member of the Elite family and the last scooter from the 1980’s still on sale.

Designed to compete with other 2-stroke 50cc scooters (Yamaha’s Vino and Vespa’s ET2), the 4-stroke CHF50 was slower accelerating but a step ahead technologically with its cleaner and more efficient liquid cooled 4-stroke engine. This engine was a new 2-valve, carburated 4-stroke that included several technological advances. Specifically, it was the first liquid cooled 50cc scooter engine from Honda and it introduced a clever starting system that did away with the starter motor and instead used the silent alternator to start the engine.

Honda also released a restricted version of this new scooter in the USA called the Metropolitan II (CHF50P) that met moped laws in many areas. The main restriction on this scooter was in the variator which limited it to 25mph.

Honda made a second major announcement for 2002, the new 600cc Silverwing maxi-scooter (aka FSC600). By far Honda’s largest scooter offering ever, the Silverwing was designed to be a great touring machine and it offers excellent storage capabilities.

2003 - 2004

Honda released another landmark scooter in 2003, the rugged styled Ruckus. The most significant attribute of the Ruckus was its radical styling which resembled no other scooter. The Ruckus shares the same basic engine/drivetrain as the Metropolitan / Jazz but it’s fresh styling attracted an entirely new audience to Honda. Since its introduction, the Ruckus has become quite popular with a large aftermarket parts scene now present. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that it has become the best selling scooter in North America.

Three years after its second discontinuation in the USA, Honda again revived the aging Helix scooter for 2004 in response to enthusiasts cries who weren’t happy with the modern styled Reflex. This was the second time the Helix had been resurrected since its initial introduction way back in 1986.

2005
For the 2005 model year Honda introduced the ill fated 250cc Big Ruckus (PS250). Attempting to build on the success of the Ruckus, the

Big Ruckus would sell poorly which was due in part to the high price tag, Honda’s decision to only offer it in yellow and styling that arguably lacked the charm of it’s smaller sibling.

Honda also added the ‘S’ version of the Ruckus (NPS50S) that got you a fancier paint job for an extra $50. In the first couple years, this fancy paint job was a camo pattern on the ‘battery box’ and matte metallic paint. In later years, the ‘S’ models would get colors like silver and matte grey.

2006
Honda revised the Metropolitan / Jazz and Ruckus scooters with a new crankcase ventilation system and a few other performance tweaks. As a result, top speed rose from about 37mph to 42mph and a serious problem with crankshaft bearing failure was eliminated. This crankshaft bearing problem resulted from poor crankcase ventilation leading to oil contamination. This problem affects 2003 - 2005 Ruckus’s and Metropolitan / Jazz scooters and it remains as one of very few quality issues Honda scooters have had.

2007
After two slow years, the Big Ruckus was dropped from the North American market, making the few that were sold rare scooters and likely a future collectors item.

Honda also dropped the restricted version of the Metropolitan called the Metropolitan II (CHF50P).

2008
The amazing 22 year run ended for the Elite 80 after the 2007 model year. With Honda’s new 50cc scooters offering nearly the same performance with modern styling at a lower price, apparently the Elite 80 became less attractive to buyers.

Honda also cut the Helix for a remarkable third time, making 2007 the last model year for both of these legendary scooters. Honda’s transition to a new generation of scooters models that started in 2002 was finally complete.

2007 was also the end of the line for the Helix’s poorly recieved replacement, the Reflex. It’s remarkable that the Helix managed to hang around right until the end of its replacement, the Reflex.

2009
High gas prices and a growing scooter market meant that 2008 was the best year yet for Honda’s small 50cc scooters. By mid-summer 2008, every dealership in the USA was sold out and Honda responded with an early release of the 2009 models in early August. Besides new color choices, Honda made no changes to their scooter lineup

2010

Honda’s has announced two major scooters for the 2010 model year. The first to be announced was the SH150i scooter, which will arrive in both USA and Canada around June 2009. With the introduction of the SH150i, Honda has returned to the mid sized scooter market for the first time since 1987 when it last offered the Elite 150.

Honda claims SH150i is the best selling scooter in Europe. This large wheel scooter offers excellent stability at high speeds, fuel injection, aluminum rims and liquid cooling. The SH150i is a distant descendant of Honda’s legendary Cub. Check out the SH150i page for more info.

Further strengthening Honda’s mid-sized scooter offerings is the second new model, the 108cc 2010 Elite. Also featuring liquid cooling and fuel injection, this small wheeled scooter aims to be a practical urban runabout with huge storage, great milage and peppy power for scootering around town. 1. Vespa 90SS

Few machines command one's attention like a factory spec racer. Vespa's best run at this model was no exception. Playing off the popularity of their 50cc scooters, Vespa introduced the 90SS in 1965. Its main features included the narrower front-end and handlebars, a chromed special exhaust, and the distinctive glove box located where a motorcycle's gas tank usually sits.
The 90SS pretty much has to top the list for its combination of two outstanding factors: availability and desirability. The 90SS is, without a doubt, one of the hardest of all scooters to come across in the US. In the last ten years I've seen more handlebar and pre-50's bikes come round than one of these scooters. In fact, I have only ever seen one in person. This level of rarity coupled with everyone's love of Vespa's speedier machines, (and, I suspect, that glove box) has catapulted the 90SS's values into the stratosphere of $7k+.
The only exception to this rule would have to be in New Zealand. Apparently, Vespa imported more 90SS's into New Zealand than anywhere else in the world. The smallish island nation is rife with them compared to the rest of the world. Go figure.

2. Lambretta A Model

Sweet, sweet deco! Does any scooter in the world possess a more rad front legshield? My vote says no! Resembling the best in skyscraping scoot-style, the Lambretta Model A is a dream come true. Watch the ride, though, as it's a pretty rigid scooter. Available in pea green, the model A kick-started Lambretta's foray into scooters (check the distinctive bent pipe frame on all Lambrettas... they were in the plumbing biz before scooters!). As progenitors, they are priced accordingly.
Occasionally you will see this scooter in the states. Most have to come from Italy directly (or sometimes Argentina)and the cost of importing doesn't help their bottom line. The engines being a bit tricky, and the tin work will set you back. And, in case you are new to the scene, this is the style of bike ridden by Matt Damon's character in "The Talented Mr. Ripley".

3. Pre-1950s Vespas

Again, being the first scooters 'round has played havoc with their pricing. Rarely available in the USA, the number of pre-50's scooters in the USA can be counted on one person's hands. According to Victor Voris, scooters from Italy weren't very pricey up until a few years ago, and then they skyrocketed, approximately coinciding with the re-introduction of the Vespa into the US.
There are several distinguishing factors to help tell these early scooters apart from other handlebar scooters: side seams, aluminum cowling, hand-screwed nose-cowls, and a lower level of general consistency in the production work will help you identify them. Their main characteristic, however, is generally the chrome control rods in place of cables.
If one wants to get picky, there is a holy triumvirate of pre-50's scooters: the 1946 first run, the 1948-9 "U" for utility bike, and the "Il Paperino" prototype. Values on these are purely speculative, but for the lowliest pre-50's scooter I'd expect to pay $3500 USD and up.

4. Vespa GS VS1-4

The GS! Everyone loves a GS, and the earlier GS's command some value. Early scooters (introduced in 1960) ran the old style shifting assembly with distinctive swept-back cables, but still bore the extra large, curvaceous frames and sweet style that would make the GS so popular. Unrestored scooters can hit $2500 USD.

5. Lambretta GP200

Funny that the most valuable Lambrettas are the oldest and then the most recent. GP 200's are akin to Vespa's Rally 200 in that they represented a high-performance machine designed for speed, handling, and killer looks (provided by the Bertone styling group). Also to note are the square headlight, shorter forks, modified bodywork, and disc brakes. There is even an electronic ignition on a few models to boot!
Innocenti imported very few of these to the US, so most of what you will see will be from India. Italian production ceased in '71, and Indian in '97. Italian bikes are reputed to be of a higher quality in the metal work, and Indian bikes generally require extensive motor work.
Prices will vary, but I've seen the newer bikes go for as much as $4500 USD.

6. Lambretta TV200

A very collectible, classic Italian Lambretta. One of the first 200's available, the TV engenders love at first sight with its smart lines and crazy Mod style. Fairly rare in the US, it mainly went to England where the scooter performance scene was really heating up.
Innocenti created this scooter it to take out the GS's, and it basically did. More horsepower made for a faster top-end speed, which made the TV top dog in its day.

7. Vespa GS160

The last in line, and, some say, the best of the breed - the GS 160 was an early king in England's influential Mod scene, until the raw horsepower of the TV200 pushed it aside in the early 60's.
The redesigned 160 had an updated body design, a larger engine, different trim, rims, and glove boxes. Absolutely perfect in almost every way, the 160 is big, curvy, stylized, and very fast, which always seems to be a hit with the kids. Hey, if it was good enough for Roger Daltrey...

8. Lambretta SX200

Much like the TV 200, this scooter is sleek and fast, and fortunately for us, came to the US in larger quantities than the TV. This bike just rules.
Increased power, reliability, and handling make this bike a valid daily driver, even in the new millenium. Scooterists covet them for their collectibility, coupled with their drivability. Pricing is all over the map as many of the bikes can be had from Europe for fairly reasonable prices (kind of like finding American muscle cars in pretty good condition here in the States).
Take care to note the raddest side cowls ever produced by Lambretta: the chrome arrows typify speed, grace, and style. Tres, tres Mod.

9. Vespa SS180

This is sort of a transitional scooter for Vespa. This series led the march from GS to Rally, and sported a redesigned body. It's slimmer, more angular, and pretty much looks like a Rally. This bike also rocked that trapezoidal headlight meant to convince fans of the faster Lambrettas that it could keep up.
Basically a rarer Rally 200, or, a Rally for the collectibility freak. Neat bikes, but not much to recommend them over a Rally 200 excepting the "older and more rare bike" factor. Similar price range as Rallys.

10. Handlebar Model Vespa

The poor man's rod model. Cool old look that came to this country in droves. Good numbers of these things kick it in barns and backyards across the states, and at this point it is largely a factor of age and poor care that has made them a rarity.
These are the early scooters, and, as such, sport several features of dubious quality: 8" wheels, piston induction,and no front dampers on the Sears/Allstate models, which are the most numerous by far. Rideability is very limited at this point, and you are best off sticking to rallies, shows, and side streets. They do break down pretty frequently, mostly due to age or poor restorations, but they do command pretty high prices, for age and collectibility alone. The neato ones from Europe have lights mounted on the front cowl, and the occasional Brit bike has one mounted on the apron.

The History of Scooters – Zipping Through the Years

Have you noticed that there are more scooters on the streets these days? Don’t they look like fun? They look as though you can just hop on them and have a blast riding around town. And you can! They’re delightful machines, offering not only a very affordable mode of transportation, but a lot of opportunities to have fun just zipping around. We’re going to look at the history of scooters, and see how people have been depending on them to get around town, for over a century.
The Industrial Revolution instills man’s need for speed

The invention of the scooter could be credited to a number of people, depending on our definition of a scooter. It just happens that a Scotsman named Kirkpatrick McMillan (“Pate” to his friends) came up with the idea of a pedal-driven bicycle somewhere around 1840. He was working as a blacksmith when he was asked to repair a hobby horse, which had wheels and was propelled along by pushing it with your foot, just like the modern-day scooters popular with the kids.

From this, Pate took a crank that he’d already invented, and integrated it into a contraption that had two wheels, and was propelled with pedals. This first bicycle, called “velocipede”, took a while to catch on, but the idea sparked the idea that there must be ways to get around faster. The need for speed was born.

Many people experimented with the bicycle, trying to find a way to make it go faster. Then, in 1868, in France, Michaux-Perraux attached a small commercial steam engine to a bicycle. There were other attempts to use gas engines on a bicycle to speed it up. Gottlieb Daimler, known as the “Father of the Motorcycle”, was successful with the gas engine/bicycle combination. It was called a motocyclette, and used aeronautical design principles.

But the first real “scooter”, or 2-wheeled vehicle, that was mass-produced, was developed by Hildebrand & Wolfmueller. This wasn’t just a bicycle with a motor attached, it was a distinct unique entity in itself. But that was the extent of the scooter industry for many years – until after World War II.
The Vespa sets the stage for the scooter industry

An Italian company, Piaggio, had been in the manufacturing business for years, eventually relying on aircraft as their main product. But since they were building bombers, they became a strategic target during the War, and their factory was totally destroyed. In fact, all of Italy was in bad shape, especially their roads and transportation systems.

Enrico Piaggio, the founder’s son, recognized the drastic need for an affordable transportation method for the Italian people, something that could be easily maneuvered around the war-torn streets and roads. Corradino D’Ascanio, one of Piaggio’s aeronautical engineers (credited with inventing the first helicopter) was given the task of filling this transportation void.

D’Ascanio’s invention fit the bill to a T. Using the same principle of one-piece construction that was used in airplane design, he created a vehicle with a single steel chassis. He called it a monocoque, a French word meaning single shell. It also shared the airplane’s front wheel principles, using a fork design, so that the wheel could be easily changed.

When D’Ascanio finished his model, he presented it to Enrico Piaggio, who took one look at it and said, ”Sembra una vespa!”, which is Italian for “It looks like a wasp!” The Vespa was born. And if you think of what a wasp looks like, it’ll give you some idea of how sleek and streamlined the Vespa was.

The Vespa was a two-wheeled vehicle, different from the motorcycle (which D’Ascanio disliked immensely). The front of the steel frame was wide, stopping dirt and dust from flying up on the rider. So it not only catered to the Italian desire to always look good, but it also provided a reliable form of transportation. And true to Italian style, they loved the scooter’s sleek, elegant and classy look, with it’s bright colors, like pastel green or, if you preferred, jet black.

The first Vespa was built in 1946, and in its first 3 years of production, it sold about 35,000 scooters, so it was obviously very popular. By the mid-fifties, Vespas were being exported to other countries, like Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain and Spain. No matter what country you lived in, zipping around on a scooter gave the rider a sense of freedom and independence, feeling that they weren’t a part of the traffic, but somehow “above” it.
The Lambretta was hot on the heels of the Vespa

Another Italian, Ferdinando Innocenti, was pioneering in the steel tubing industry when, after opening a huge new plant in 1931, he decided to use his steel tubing technology to come up with a cheap form of transportation. Just like Piaggio, after the War, Innocenti saw the need for an affordable, reliable form of transportation, like a motorcycle, but less expensive, and with a little more weather protection for the rider.

Expense had to be a factor in the solution – both to manufacture and to run. And the solution came in the form of a scooter called the Lambretta “A”. It used a single-cylinder, 2-stroke, 123cc engine – a fair amount of power. One of its biggest selling features was it’s gas mileage – it could go about 120 miles on a gallon of gas, and that was pretty important because there was a real gas shortage following the War.

The Lambretta was basically the same design as the Vespa, with a step-through steel frame, and seating for a rider and passenger. The rider’s feet rested on the floorboards, with the front frame protecting his lower body from the weather. There was also a windshield to protect the upper body. And there was still that Italian sleek look, and that sense of adventure and excitement that came with riding these open air wonders.
The scooter gets international exposure

There wasn’t a lot of advertising done for scooters. The concept pretty well sold itself. But one thing that really increased its popularity was its use in movies and advertising. For example, there’s a famous scene in “Roman Holiday”, starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, where they ride around a fountain on a scooter. There was also The Who’s movie, “Quadrophenia”, in the early ‘60s, that showed people zipping around London on scooters.

Scooters were also used in many forms of advertising, including posters and commercials. The commercials weren’t actually for the scooters, but they were very noticeable in the ads. Scooters were always portrayed as a fun vehicle, light and maneuverable, easy to ride and easy to handle. And as it is with most ads, they’re designed for people to remember them. Scooter sales proved that they did just that.
The Japanese put their ingenuity to work

Up until the mid ‘80s, Vespa and Lambretta pretty well dominated the market with their cool Italian scooters. Then Honda, with its Elite scooter, and Yamaha, with its Riva model, jumped into the scooter market. These new scooters had fresh modern lines, not like the Italian models at all. The Italians saw them as cheap plastic copies, but consumers loved them – they were selling like hotcakes.

Today, Honda’s 1200 dealers in the U.S., 90% of which carry scooters, give it a big piece of the scooter market. But their first big contribution to the scooter industry came in 1983, with their Aero 50. The Aero 50 has been referred to as the first modern scooter. It’s more stylish lines and sharper angles, added to its fully-automatic transmission, made it a much more functional scooter than its predecessors. It was lightweight and easy to handle, which led to its description as a “twist-the-throttle-and-go operation”.

The 49cc air-cooled, 2-stroke engine gave the Aero 50 great fuel efficiency, but it didn’t meet U.S. emission standards. However, in 1985, it got a makeover, with a wider, bigger seat to make it more comfortable. Honda’s slogan in all their advertising was “your ticket to ride happy”. And have you ever seen an unhappy scooter rider?

Another big reason for the Japanese scooter success was their ability to develop engines that were more environmentally-friendly. The old Vespas and Lambrettas gave off heavy exhaust, and with emission laws becoming a factor in the U.S., the Japanese scooters swept the market. Scooter riders also liked the convenience of the automatic transmissions on the Japanese models.

The Japanese scooters were so successful that they eventually drove Vespa out of the U.S. market. The Vespa had become out-dated, with its 2-stroke high-emission engine and its manual grip-shift transmission. Piaggio decided it could do just as well by staying in its own market in Europe. And they actually did that quite well, without having to make any changes in its scooter designs.
Other Oriental manufacturers get into the act

Yamaha came in second in the Japanese scooter production race, which was pretty good, considering they offered only 3 models to choose from. Their success is built on their low prices and flexible tuning options, while still providing smart, sleek looks.

Suzuki has just recently entered the U.S. scooter market with their Burgman maxi-scooter series. They’ve done very well by finding a niche market and sticking with just that. They’ve been described as practical, comfortable, fast, stylish and economical – all the makings of a great scooter.

Kymco, from Taiwan, jumped into the scooter market in May 2000. They also sell ATVs and motorcycles, but their scooter sales have gone very well. Also from Taiwan is MZ, which is an offshoot of MZ Motorcycle Company from Germany. They have 4 models in their scooter line, but they’re not street-legal in California (where the emission standards are very high). But they do very well on the East Coast. MZ scooters are distributed through Motorrad of North America.

Then there’s TN’G, China’s contribution to the scooter industry. The name TN’G was derived from the descriptive term we mentioned earlier: “twist and go”. They were first distributed by CMSI of Seattle, and could be bought at Costco. Since TN’G’s agreement with Costco ended, they’ve set up their own distribution network, with 172 dealers across the country.
India hasn’t been left out of the picture

There are two major scooter manufacturers in India, LML and Bajaj. LML originally modeled their scooters after the Vespa P-Series, but they’ve changed over the years, culminating in their current model, the Stella. The Stella is custom-made for The Genuine Scooter Company in Chicago. Those who favor the Vespa really like the Stella because of their similarities. It has a 150cc air-cooled reed-valve 2-stroke engine, with a 4-speed manual transmission.

India’s other scooter manufacturer, Bajaj, offers two models to choose from, the Chetak and the Legend. They both have 150cc 4-stroke, a 4-speed manual transmission, and an anti-dive front suspension. LML are currently working on developing a 200cc model with a 4-stroke automatic engine, soon to be released.

Bajaj has since expanded to the U.S., opening Bajaj USA. They’re very excited about their new addition to the scooter industry – the 3-wheeler utility vehicle. There’ll be 3 models, each sporting a scooter chassis, with variations that include a rickshaw model, and two pickup models – one enclosed and one open. These cool new 3-wheelers will go 40 mph, using a 9 hp engine, which gets 80mpg. And they can carry up to 1000 pounds. Scooters have definitely come a long way.
U.S. scooter markets drive the industry

Since the United States has such a large population, other countries do their best to gain their share of the markets there. There are four major areas in the world that compete for American scooter sales: Japan, China/Taiwan, Italy/Spain, and India. We’ve already mentioned Italy’s contribution, and Spain runs parallel to that. There are also other countries, contributing on a lesser basis, like Taiwan, Korea, England, Germany, and the U.S. itself.

It appears that the history of scooters has led to the United States as the major factor in new innovations and what the consumer wants. Out of the top 10 U.S. scooter markets, it’s no surprise, with their great weather and their focus on cheap environmentally-friendly transportation, that California was number one in 2003. The Bay Area in San Francisco sold the least scooters of any other U.S. market, perhaps because of their numerous very steep hills. This may actually be a misconception, because the new scooter models have much more power than the older ones, so those figures may change.

A powerful factor affecting the motorized scooter industry is the laws that regulate the use of these vehicles on the streets. Take California, for example. They have high emission standards because there are so many vehicles adding to air pollution. But motorized scooters, according to California law, aren’t classified as “motor vehicles”, so as long as they conform to regulations (under 50cc, traveling no more than 35mph) they don’t need to be licensed. That translates into another great reason to rely on electric or gas-powered motorized scooters for transportation.
Where is the scooter industry going in the future?

Man’s need for speed is gradually being replaced by their need to recede, as far as the world’s resources are concerned. There’s a strong emphasis these days on creating more fuel-efficient vehicles, at a lesser cost. This falls right into the hands of the scooter industry. Scooters are epitomized by their lightweight construction, which gives them much higher fuel-efficiency ratings that any other kind of motorized vehicle. Of course, if you get an electric scooter, your fuel costs are zero!

And more and more scooters are being built using 4-stroke engines, which are in accordance with the new tougher emission standards. And the great thing about these developments in scooter technology is that they do it all without losing the sleek stylish lines that attract so many scooter lovers.

Scooters are definitely the way to go if you’re looking for cheap transportation. They’re easy to handle, fit in small spaces, can be parked almost anywhere, can zip around traffic jams, are economical – the advantages over other vehicles are many. And there are also many models to choose from, so you can get just the right one to fit your lifestyle.

Today, you can buy electric scooters, or an electric bike, a motorized scooter, a mini-scooter, a maxi-scooter, a 3-wheeled scooter, a gas scooter, a kids electric scooter, and even a mini Harley Chopper scooter. Whether you ride your scooter to work or to school, or whether you use your scooter to run errands, or whether you just want to zip around having fun on your scooter, there’s a model that suits you.

So get online and check out the scooter reviews, ratings and comparisons on the Internet. With all those scooters to choose from, there certainly has to be one that’s waiting just for you!

The Super Cub had semi-automatic transmission before any form of automatic or semi-automatic transmission was used by Vespa or Lambrettas.
Scooters were originally intended for low-power personal transportation with engines between 50 and 250 cc. It is still very widely used for this application. However, maxi-scooters, with engines from 250 to 800 cc, have been developed for Western markets.
The popularity of scooters as a form of personal motor transport is partly based on their low cost of purchase and operation and their convenience in parking and storage. Licensing, registration, and insurance requirements for scooters have been made easier and less expensive than those for cars in many parts of the world.
